Meetings
Young People Fellowship Meeting
Saturday, 6:30-7:45pm
2nd Floor Community Room at the 3rd St.
Farmer’s Market, 6333 W. 3rd.
The focus of this meeting is on young people (18-25), but open to all. Family members, friends, and people who are curious about the fellowship are also encouraged to attend. This meeting is a rotating writing and speaker format with fellowship afterwards.
Currently, service positions are available for a literature person, delegate, and Lifeline representative. Lifeline is OA’s monthly journal of recovery. Click here for more information.
Please note that this meeting does NOT meet the FIRST Saturday of every month.
Questions? Please call Christine at 847-404-7125. Hope to see you there!
Service
Service is one of OA’s eight Tools and for good reason. Giving service builds self-esteem, strengthens our commitment to recovery, and offers us the opportunity to give back some of what the program has given us.
Help carry the OA message by speaking at meetings, sponsoring (and having a sponsor), calling newcomers and others who may be struggling, and providing information about OA to folks who might be interested in the program.
Giving back at the meeting-level can also help to reinforce your recovery. Many meetings have open service positions. If you are new to the fellowship, you can help by setting up chairs, preparing coffee/tea, or taking on an available service position, such as greeter or timer. Please keep in mind that some meetings have an abstinence requirement for certain service positions, such as secretary or treasurer. Whatever service you can offer makes a difference and can strengthen your own recovery and the fellowship as a whole.
Have you thought about getting involved in service above the group level? There are a number of committees at the Los Angeles Intergroup level, including the Young People Committee, 12th Step Within Committee, and the Birthday Party Committee. For more information on each of these committees, check out the newsletter of the LA Intergroup, The 12th Stepper. For a web version, visit the LA Intergroup website at www.oalaig.org/html/12th_stepper.html.
OA also has service positions at the Regional and World Service levels. The LA Intergroup is part of Region 2. For more information on giving service in this way, check out the Region 2 website at www.oar2.org or the OA World Service website at www.oa.org.
Other ways of getting involved in OA service include volunteering for special events, helping out at the OA office, or contributing articles to The 12th Stepper or to Lifeline. Consider sharing your perspective and experience as a young person in the fellowship – What brought you to OA? How have you changed in recovery? What would you want another young person who is struggling with food to know about this program?
Remember that each of us has something to contribute. As a young person in OA, you have a special perspective to offer. Whatever your talents and interests, there are so many ways to get involved in OA service – won’t you join us?
